Commonly Asked Questions about Refractive Laser Surgery: What is PRK? PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is laser surgery to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. An Excimer laser beam is used to flatten the front of the of the cornea. The laser beam removes a microscopic amount of tissue - less than the thickness of a human hair in most cases, from the front of the cornea. What is LASIK? With the LASIK procedure, a thin layer of the cornea is lifted to create a "flap" that stays connected on one side. Next the Excimer laser sculpts the cornea with cool, ultraviolet light. Finally, the "flap" is returned to its original position for a quick, natural recovery. What is CustomVue WaveScan? Clear vision is the result of light passing through a perfectly shaped eye so that it focuses clearly on the retina. Abnormal focusing conditions of the eye are called refractive errors and consist of the following: Nearsightedness: Nearsightedness (myopia) is when the curvature of the cornea is too steep, and the focus of the rays of light that enter the eye fall short of the retina. The result is a blurry view of distant objects.
Farsightedness: Farsightedness (hyperopia) occurs when an eye is too short for the cornea's curvature. Light rays entering the eye focus behind the retina, and as a result, a blurred image of near objects occurs.
