Making history is not a dream for Dr. Mike S. McFarland. It is a reality. Known as an innovator and teacher, he is one of the best known ophthalmologists in America. In January of 1990, Dr. McFarland was the first eye surgeon ever to perform cataract surgery without the use of sutures, or stitches. The development of this technique, commonly called “No-Stitch” cataract surgery, is considered to be one of the most important milestones in modern ophthalmology. With fewer complications and faster healing time, it is now the technique of choice for thousands of surgeons around the world.

Dr. McFarland has also been chosen as one of the “Best Doctors in America” every year since 1994. Only 4% of doctors in the United States are selected by physician surveys involving more than one million votes. Only two ophthalmologists from Arkansas were chosen for the current edition, and Dr. McFarland is the only cataract surgeon who was recognized. He was also named one of the “Best Doctors in Arkansas” in the most recent Arkansas Times poll.

Dr. McFarland’s accomplishments have been recognized on both a national and international level. In 1992, he received the “Innovators Award” for his development of sutureless cataract. Dr. McFarland was the second American surgeon to be honored with this award. He has trained hundreds of eye surgeons across the United States, and is a contributing editor to medical reference books.

Dr. McFarland is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist and has been in private practice for 24 years. He now sees patients in our Pine Bluff, Hot Springs, and Little Rock clinic locations, and offers our patients the convenience of outpatient surgery. Dr. McFarland specializes in cataract and laser surgery and also enjoys comprehensive medical ophthalmology.
