What is diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that keeps your body from being able to monitor and control your body’s blood sugar levels. This can cause your blood sugar levels to drastically rise and fall.

When unmonitored or untreated, high blood sugar levels can damage tiny blood vessels in the eye and cause irreparable damage. This condition is called Diabetic Retinopathy.

The longer a person has diabetes, the greater are his/her chances to develop diabetic retinopathy.  Almost 80% of people who have diabetes for 15 years or more, have some damage to the blood vessels in their retina.
