Welcome to our symptom checker.

Feel free to look around at some of the common symptoms people have that we treat every day. You can learn the association between common symptoms and the most frequent eye conditions. Of course our site is not for self-diagnosis but to get you thinking about your symptoms and how to get treated. Only through a personal consultation with one of our eye care professionals can we provide an accurate diagnosis.

Blurry Vision

There are many causes of blurry vision, and although the majority are not alarming, it’s important to know that there are some potentially life-threatening conditions behind this symptom. Usually blurred vision is caused by refractive errors, including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, or presbyopia (age-related loss of near vision). In other cases, it could be due to low blood sugar or the onset of diabetic retinopathy in diabetics. If you are experiencing blurry vision, please come in for a personal consultation.

Dry Eyes

Do you have dry eyes? Up to 12 million Americans suffer from a disease called dry eye syndrome. People with dry eyes frequently experience burning and stinging of their eyes, their eyes often feel sticky, and their eyes are often red. Interestingly, some people with dry eyes actually have periods when their eyes get so watery that tears spill over their eyelids and run down their cheeks. We have a wide array of dry eye treatment options but it is important to determine the cause of the dry eye to assist in the treatment protocol. Start your journey to dry eye relief here!

Night Driving Problems

Have you ever experienced night driving problems? Many people report glare and halos from on-coming traffic. This can be caused by simple nearsightedness or blurry myopic vision but is also something associated with cataracts. Symptoms of night driving vision problems are most likely obvious but include fuzzy, blurred oncoming traffic, inability to read signage at night, insecurity while driving and eye strain that might lead to dry eyes.

We would suggest a thorough eye health examination and also checking for the onset of cataracts. Call us today to make an appointment and make sure to reference this eye condition.

Halos

Seeing bright circles or rings around a light source, like headlights, is known as halos. Halos around lights are most noticeable at night or when you’re in dim or dark areas. Halos are a typical problem linked to cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. It can be compared to a window that is frosted or yellowed, or looking through a foggy or dusty car windshield. Things look blurry, hazy or less colorful with a cataract. The aging process is the most influential factor in developing cataracts, and it is quite common for older people to have a cataract in one or both eyes.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a refractive error where people are unable to see objects clearly from a distance or up close. Astigmatism is asymmetric steepening of the cornea or natural lens, causing light to be focused unevenly. Astigmatism may occur in varying degrees in each eye and can accompany myopia or hyperopia. To individuals with uncorrected astigmatism, images may look blurry or shadowed. Astigmatism can accompany any form of refractive error and is very common. Treatment options for astigmatism can include glasses, contact lenses, LASIK eye surgery, or TORIC Interocular Lens Implants in cataract surgery or a Clear Lens Exchange.

Distance Vision Problems

If you cannot see at a distance this is most likely a refractive error called nearsightedness, also known as myopia. Symptoms of nearsightedness often include blurry vision at a distance, the need to squint, difficulty driving, eye fatigue, and headaches. Myopia is often diagnosed between the ages of 8 and 12. Your eyes are growing at this age, so the shape of your eyes can change. Adults usually remain nearsighted if they have the condition as a child. Adults can also become nearsighted due to certain health conditions, such as diabetes. Myopia arises when the front surface of your eye, called the cornea, is steeper than usual. Myopia can be treated with a wide range of treatment options including: glasses, contact lenses, LASIK eye surgery, and even Clear Lens Exchange.

Trouble Reading

Reading vision problems typically set in as people age, particularly in the 40’s. A condition called presbyopia is typically what causes this. Presbyopia is the age-related loss of flexibility in the crystalline lens of the eye that makes it difficult for you to see objects that are close to you. Symptoms include: a tendency to hold reading material far away, regular blurred vision at normal reading lengths and eyestrain or headaches after close up work or activities. Contact us today to find out about your options for treating presbyopia.

Eyelid Issues

Eyelid problems can occur at any age and may be related to infection, inflammation, problems with muscles around your eyes or general aging. Some concerning symptoms regarding eyelid issues are: difficulty closing or opening eyes, dry or water eyes, crusty eyelids, lumps on eyelids, itchy eyelids, gritty eyes, or swollen eyelids. There are treatments available and we'd love to talk to you about them!

Patient Reviews

"Seven years ago, I went for a LASIK consult at TLC Eye Care in LR. I didn't make it through the preliminary test before they stopped testing and told me I had Keratoconus in my left eye and that I would NEVER be a candidate for LASIK. I decided to try again with McFarlands, so seven years later, I made my appointment at McFarland Eye Care in Little Rock. They told me that I never had Keratoconus in my left eye and I received my LASIK surgery a couple days later. I can see 20/20! Amazing! And a dream come true!"

Joseph Roy

"I didn't realize the colors I was missing. I didn't realize how much of my life I'd been missing until I had my cataract surgery. I can see my wife's beautiful face again. I can see the TV again. I can see colors again. I can see all the little details I'd been missing. Cataract surgery has been a God-send."

John Tate

"I had no idea how bad my vision was until my eye test. Dr. McFarland and his staff are the most caring and professional staff I have ever used. My vision is now 20/20 thanks to them!"

Rhonda Compton

"This is an awesome group of people who always make you feel at home."

Scarlet Knepper

"I know coming to McFarland's was God's plan for me. I lost my husband this year and my experience at McFarland's has really turned my year around. Because of them, I can see. I know my husband would be so happy for me. Being able to see is a blessing and it's been such a positive thing in my life during such a dark time. I love this team. They are always top-notch and I appreciate all they've done for me."

Shirley Reed

"I was very pleased with the doctors and staff at McFarland Eye Care! They always took great care of me. I would recommend them to friends and family and to anyone! Thanks so much to Dr. Hoffmann and staff!"

Mr & Mrs Woods

"I've had glasses since the 4th grade and contacts since the 6th grade. As a nurse, sometimes glasses and contacts get really annoying after a long shift. I am so thankful for LASIK at McFarland's! I never have to bother with glasses or contacts again!!!"

Kristen Anderson

"Before McFarland Eye Care, life was dim. Literally because I couldn't see anything but clouds, like I was in a dream. Everyday living was difficult. I couldn't' see to drive at night. But Thank God for Dr. Newbolt! He did my cataract surgery and the same night it was lie the dream went away and my reality was that I could see again!"

Shavon Jamesm

"Y’all did so good by me!!! I can see!!! I remember being nervous going into the operating room but I don’t remember much after that. All I know is that when I got home, I was laying on the couch and couldn’t stop laughing because I was so happy! I can see!"
