Making history is not a dream for Dr. Mike S. McFarland. It is a reality. Known as an innovator and teacher, he is one of the best known Ophthalmologists in America. In January of 1990, Dr. McFarland was the first eye surgeon ever to perform cataract surgery without the use of suture or stitches. The development of this technique, commonly called “No-Stitch” cataract surgery, is considered to be one of the most important milestones in modern Ophthalmology. With fewer complications and faster healing time, it is now the technique of choice for thousands of surgeons around the world.
Dr. McFarland’s accomplishments have been recognized on both a national and international level. In 1992, he received the “Innovators Award” for his development of sutureless cataract. Dr. McFarland was the second American surgeon to be honored with this award. He has trained hundreds of eye surgeons across the United States, and is a contributing editor to medical reference books.
